(Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System)

WHMIS, short form for Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System, is a nationwide system that was developed to provide a standardized classification system for the control, safe handling, storage, and disposal procedures of hazardous materials in the workplace.

The primary objective for the online WHMIS course is to provide course participants with the skills necessary to access and apply the information needed to protect their health and safety while working with WHMIS controlled products. The course meets the legislated worker training requirements for all Federal and Provincial workplaces in all provinces and territories.

The course consists of the following units:
Unit 1 – Intro to WHMIS
Unit 2 – Product Labels
Unit 3 – Hazard Symbols
Unit 4 – Material Data Safety Sheets (MSDSs)
Unit 5 – WHMIS Education- Roles and Responsibilities
Unit 6 – Exemptions and Restricted Applications

In Canada, all employers are required by law to provide WHMIS instruction to all employees who work in contact with, or in proximity to, any materials defined as “hazardous”. Your workplace WHMIS education plan must also be reviewed on an annual basis.

The goal of WHMIS is to reduce injury and disease by defining and classifying specific health and safety information about Controlled Products so that the information can be used by all employees to reduce potential accidents involving hazardous materials and procedures.

WHMIS training is essential to insuring the safety and well-being of employees in the workplace.
